Following the Conservative Government’s announcement of £2.5 million for local councils, local Tories have announced plans to protect our much-loved markets and town centre businesses through Christmas and beyond.

Cllr Kris Wilson, Leader of the Opposition (Whitestone), said:

“Covid is placing a heavy burden on our businesses and market traders, and it is our job to provide as much help as possible over what is normally the busiest time of year for them. The Conservative Government has provided the money and it is down to us as to how we spend it. Our town centres are the beating heart of our economy, and I’m committed to ensuring that we invest in Nuneaton and Bedworth in these challenging months ahead.”

Details of the Conservative Christmas Rescue Package include:

  • Free town centre car parking in December and January
  • Free rents for our regular market traders in December, with reductions in January and February
  • Rent relief for council town centre properties from December to February

Cllr Sam Croft, Shadow Finance Cabinet Member, said:

“This economic rescue package will jump start our local economy in time for Christmas. We have listened to the message from local businesses and market traders about what they need to ride out the Covid storm. Yet again, it is Conservatives who are backing business and have a real plan to help our town centres when they are in need.”

Marcus Jones, Member of Parliament for Nuneaton, warmly welcomed the Conservative plans for our town centres:

“This is an excellent package for Nuneaton town centre, and the many businesses that have had such a tough year. This will help them go into 2021 with confidence that the Conservative councillors and Government are on their side.”

Craig Tracey, Member of Parliament for Bedworth, also backed the Rescue Plan:

“I know these measures will be really welcomed by local residents, traders and businesses alike.

“Shopkeepers and market traders in particular have been in contact with me to say how let down they feel by our local Borough Council due to a lack of commercial support during the pandemic in particular.

“Targeting the substantial funds on offer from Government directly to our High Street entrepreneurs would provide a huge boost to them as we head towards the end of a very challenging year and help renew confidence as we look forward to 2021.”

Conservatives have submitted a request for a Full Council to bring these fully costed rescue measures into force, and a date is awaited for when council will debate and vote on the proposals.
